This informational history book is one of a series set up with a bit of a time travel theme, in which the author and her dog Max whisk the reader through 10 four page chapters that packed with information about topics such as Roman Society, The World of Work, and of course Building and Engineering. Although the tone is chatty, there is a strong emphasis on information. Both photos of ancient ruins and four color drawings illustrate the content. The series by this experienced juvenile nonfiction author does not really need each chapters cartoon of the author Elaine making comments to her dog Max along the lines of Is this a GREAT empire or WHAT? as they enjoy a massage parlor. All the academic bells and whistles such as table of contents and timeline, glossary, and index make this is a competent resource book for middle school social studies.
